Faculty Research Grants and Leaves
Purpose
Faculty research grants and leaves:
- foster professional development and effective teaching through research
- allow faculty to make research results available to public forums for professional consideration.
New faculty and new research areas are encouraged in the proposal review process.
Description
Research Grants
- The research grant is for research outside the contract year. It will normally include a stipend of $3,000.
- The research grant may include a designated amount above the stipend for the relevant and appropriate expenses, payable on presentation of receipts. Appropriate research expenses are typically items related to research needs, equipment, etc. Travel is to be requested through the academic affairs office.
- Faculty on 11- or 12-month contracts are ineligible for research stipends. They may apply for research leaves and for reimbursement of appropriate expenses.
- Recipients will need to complete their projects or negotiate an acceptable resolution with the Faculty Development Committee in order to be eligible for subsequent grants or leaves.
- Faculty approved for sabbaticals may submit proposals for appropriate research expenses, but awards will not include a stipend.
Research Leaves
- The research leave is a one-semester teaching load reduction of up to three (3) hours. Due to limited funding requests for six hours will be considered only in rare instances.
- The research leave may include a designated amount for relevant and appropriate expenses, payable on presentation of receipts.
- A faculty member with an overload contract may not receive a research leave in the same academic year as the overload. Faculty on nine-month contracts who have taught an overload during the school year may apply for research grants.
- Applicants for leaves are responsible for documenting their dean’s awareness of the effect of load and support. This must occur prior to the submission deadline.
Selection Committee
The Faculty Development Committee (FDC) will review the proposals and select those to receive grants or leaves. Members of the committee who have submitted proposals may not participate in the review and selection process.
Criteria for Eligibility
- The proposal is for research appropriate to the applicant’s field.
- The applicant must be a returning full-time faculty member.
- The committee will give priority to proposals not already supported by grants that include a stipend, load credit or other leaves.
- The committee will give priority to new proposals and to proposals from new faculty. Resubmission of similar or identical proposals without indicating how the proposal builds on work from previous years will not be considered.
- The committee will give priority to peer-reviewed scholarship.
- The committee will not consider an additional proposal until the applicant has completed previously funded projects and submitted a report to the FDC by Oct. 15 of the year following the grant, or negotiated an acceptable resolution with the FDC.
- The committee will not consider proposals related to the completion of a graduate degree.
Requirements for the Proposal

- Project schedule, including anticipated date of completion
- For research leaves, include a statement of awareness of effect on load and support from the dean of the appropriate school (copies of emails are appropriate)
- Up-to-date curriculum vitae, including research grants or leaves received at Â鶹´«Ã½ Fox or elsewhere
- Relevant section from current Faculty Growth Plan
- State the number of hours of research leave (if any) you will receive in the next academic year (not including possible research leave from the FDC)
- Any additional supporting materials
Accountability, Timeline for Reporting and Submitting Approved Expenses
Research grant or leave recipients will report to the Faculty Development Committee on the progress of their projects toward completion by Oct. 15 of the year following the award. They will submit evidence of completing their projects by providing the Faculty Development Committee with documentation of any presentation, publication, or performance resulting from the underwritten research. Additionally, recipients may be asked to share their projects with the faculty through an appropriate public venue.
As possible, request any reimbursement for research grant expenses by June 30. All reimbursement for grant expenses must be requested by Oct. 15. Similarly, for fall leaves, request any reimbursement by Dec. 1, with a final date of Feb. 1; for spring leaves, request reimbursement by April 1, with a final date of June 15.
Recipients will be expected to acknowledge Â鶹´«Ã½ Fox support in all publications resulting from the grant or leave. The acknowledgement statement should read, “This project was supported in part by the Â鶹´«Ã½ Fox University Grant GFUYYYYG##“ or for leaves with “Â鶹´«Ã½ Fox University Grant GFUYYYYL##.”

Research Grants and Leaves
We are no longer accepting requests for expenses beyond the grant or leave. Some faculty may apply knowing that they would spend their grant on expenses on travel, and others may not (the committee does not require submission of receipts).
Faculty whose contracts are less than 50% devoted to teaching, those on sabbatical, and those already teaching overload in the same year as a leave request (for load release) are not eligible. Among those who submit excellent proposals, we will prioritize recipients in these situations:
- Those who follow the directions for the proposal as listed below
- Those who have converted their previous grants/leaves into relevant publications, projects or results
- Those who have received relatively less grant funding from the FDC in recent years
- Newer faculty building their research, scholarship, or project portfolio toward tenure or promotion
The Grant and Leave Proposal
Please submit a document that clearly (with labels) addresses the following questions (be sure to observe the word count).
- Basic Information: Your name, title of proposal, specify whether grant or leave, and a 50-word summary of your project
- Tell us More: Deeper description of your project (up to 500 words). Bear in mind that readers may be outside of your field. Describe things such as why your project is important, how your work affects others, how it helps our students, and what contribution you hope to make.
- Publication: In less than 50 words, explain how you plan to make your work public, through use of an item/object, journal publication, exhibition, or other viewing, use, or examination.
- Other Materials: Provide your updated CV, and if you are applying for leave (load release), a confirmation from your dean (copy of an email) that you have been approved to receive load release.
