Academic Sessions and Credits

The academic year at Ā鶹“«Ć½ Fox University is divided into two semesters of 16 weeks. In addition, the university operates a summer session that is required for some programs and optional for others.

The unit of credit is the semester hour, represented by 50 minutes of instruction each week for 16 weeks plus two hours of work outside of class each week. One credit unit for prior learning or for courses or classes offered in different formats (hybrid and online courses, intensives, labs, dissertation, etc.) represents the equivalent learning of that of the traditional semester hour (approximately 45 hours of engagement).

Credit for all courses is indicated in semester hours. All student requirements, advancements and classifications are based on these units.

In addition to traditional course formats, some courses are offered online, or partially online (hybrid). Some programs are offered through a cohort model in which small groups of students are enrolled in class together through the entire program.

Credit for Applied Lessons and Ensemble CoursesĀ 

Credit for applied lessons and ensemble courses is awarded as follows: Ā Ā 

• AppliedĀ  lessons:Ā  StudentsĀ  mayĀ  enrollĀ  forĀ  eitherĀ  oneĀ  30-Ā­minuteĀ  appliedĀ  lessonĀ  perĀ  weekĀ  forĀ  .5Ā  credit,Ā  orĀ  oneĀ  60-Ā­minuteĀ  appliedĀ  lessonĀ  perĀ  weekĀ  forĀ  1Ā  credit,Ā  withĀ  13Ā  lessonsĀ  perĀ  semester.Ā  AlthoughĀ  individualĀ  appliedĀ  instructorsā€™Ā  studioĀ  policiesĀ  vary,Ā  aĀ  minimumĀ  ofĀ  threeĀ  hoursĀ  practiceĀ  perĀ  weekĀ  isĀ  assumed. Ā 
• EnsembleĀ  courses:Ā  StudentsĀ  mayĀ  enrollĀ  forĀ  ensemblesĀ  forĀ  creditĀ  asĀ  follows:Ā 
  • MajorĀ  ensemblesĀ  (ConcertĀ  ChoirĀ  MUSA125C/325C,Ā  SymphonicĀ  BandĀ  MUSA145B/345BĀ  andĀ  ChehalemĀ  SymphonyĀ  OrchestraĀ  MUSA155/355)Ā  mayĀ  beĀ  takenĀ  forĀ  0,Ā  1Ā  orĀ  2Ā  credits.Ā  TheseĀ  ensemblesĀ  rehearseĀ  betweenĀ  120Ā  andĀ  300Ā  minutesĀ  perĀ  weekĀ  andĀ  haveĀ  substantialĀ  involvementĀ  outsideĀ  ofĀ  classĀ  time.Ā 
  • OtherĀ  ensemblesĀ  mayĀ  beĀ  takenĀ  forĀ  0Ā  orĀ  1Ā  credit.Ā  TheseĀ  ensemblesĀ  rehearseĀ  lessĀ  timeĀ  perĀ  weekĀ  andĀ  haveĀ  lessĀ  out-Ā­of-Ā­classĀ  involvement.Ā
